To all health champs over there, wishing you a very happy and strong mind which will do zero harm to yourself :)
By the way … What do you think? Which is the most heard but underrated health phenomenon nowadays?
The answer here is DEPRESSION. So, now the question is:
what can be the better approach to looking at depression?
As a serious threat to life? Or a phenomenon and part & parcel of life, which can be taken care of ???
Let's understand …
Depression is a health condition (mental condition - to be precise) in which an individual -
- Feels Lethargic.
- Feels Irritable.
- Feels Guilty (with or without a proper reason).
- Has difficulty and trouble.
- Feels no sensation of enjoyment in life with frequent mood swings.
- Loses pleasure in activities, which earlier he/she might have taken doing those activities.
- Sometimes even can feel suicidal ideation and thoughts.
Shockingly, There are hundreds of millions of individuals suffering from major depression disorder all over the world, and India is not behind :(
Then what should be the approach? How to look at this?
- Remember, depression is not a permanent mental illness.
- Depressed people are not the object of either making fun of or neglect.
- Don't have a prejudiced mindset toward people fighting depression.
- At some point, almost all civilized people go through depression with varying intensities.
- The set up of new activities of interest, challenges, and talk therapies with near and dear will help in certain cases.
- Meditation and Medication in terms of proper nutrition are the keys to helping!!!

Let's talk here about nutritional support among all others -
Various studies show that Omega-3 fatty acids are proving to be very effective in the treatment of major psychiatric and depression disorders.
The roles of Omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of depression have been studied with increased pace in the last two decades due to the heightened prevalence of depression worldwide. It is emphasized that Omega-3 fatty acids have no record of associated side effects, which deserves greater attention and interest among the scientific community for further research.
What is Omega, and how does it work?
Omega-3 fatty acids belong to a family of polyunsaturated fats. There are three main omega-3s:
- From aquatic animals like fish, we can get Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), alternatively called marine Omega-3s.
- The source of Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), is mainly vegetable oils and nuts (especially walnuts), flax seeds and flaxseed oil, leafy vegetables, and some animal fats from grass-fed animals.
- The human body generally uses ALA for energy, and its conversion into EPA and DHA is minimal.
But here is the twist -
We as a human body can make most of the needful fats from other fats or raw materials. But unfortunately, this doesn’t happen in the case of Omega-3 fatty acids. These are essential fats — the body can’t generate them from scratch and must get them from food and supplements. In short, Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal metabolism yet most mammals are not able to synthesize omega-3 fatty acids on their own.
EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids that are vital for normal brain function and development. It will be better if people with even occasional depression and symptoms of mood fluctuations consider taking omega-3s as must-have a nutritional supplement, as they may see awaited improvements in their condition.

So, in short, what does omega do to your brain?
Overall,
- In the central nervous system, cell signaling gets affected by Omega-3 fatty acids and affects dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways.
- The role of Omega-3 fatty acids was studied in commonly found conditions like schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, and eating disorders, substance use disorder, and borderline personality disorders.
Research and studies found that,
Yes... Omega 3 is truly efficient in the treatment of-
- depressive symptoms of major depression
- early stages of schizophrenia
Nevertheless, some positive results have been observed in ADHD and borderline personality disorder, though not for chronic conditions.
